Professor Dr. Izhak Englard
Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Faculty of Law

Summary
The lecture deals with the Hebrew translation of the General Civil Code, which a Jewish scholar from Galicia, named Feuerstein, prepared and published with a commentary in 1876. The main part of the lecture deals with the ideological question of what motivated a Jewish jurist in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy to undertake this extensive work, and what was the reaction and success. Finally, some remarks on the translation work of the author, who had the difficult task of expressing modern legal concepts in a language that did not know them.
